A bit of the uniqueness that has helped define the appeal of fun and games under the Fremont Street Experience canopy is disappearing with the closure this week of three businesses.
They include the La Bayou and Mermaid casinos and the long-running Girls of Glitter Gulch strip club.
Whether the deep-fried Twinkies and Oreos that helped put Mermaids on the map, so to speak, will be available elsewhere in the future remains to be seen.
The businesses have been sold to Derek and Greg Stevens, who also own the Golden Gate, The D and the shuttered Las Vegas Club property nearby. The brothers are planning to develop a new hotel-casino in the area. They have offered few details.
